Digbeth (Artifex Gallery, June 2009)
Digbeth is Birmingham's birthplace. It was where Beorma settled in the 7th century, the city's first centre of industry in the 18th century, and it became the heart of Birmingham's music and art scenes in the 20th century. Unfortunately it is often seen as run-down, neglected and unattractive, the undesirable area just behind the gleaming new Bull Ring. However, although gritty, it is full of character and visually exciting, most notably for the contrasts juxtaposed within it. As people are realising the potential of this unique place, Digbeth is undergoing huge regeneration as old, neglected buildings are being transformed into apartments, retail premises, offices and arts facilities. Before the area becomes entirely redeveloped and polished, this series aims to capture Digbeth's raw contrasts, character and unconventional beauty, whilst conveying the excitement of a constantly changing place being appropriated and brought back to life.
